Citi is devaluing ThankYou points for some cardholders, specifically those with Citi Strata Premier and Prestige cards. Starting August 24th, 2025, the cash-back redemption value will decrease from 1 cent per point to 0.75 cents per point. This means 10,000 points will be worth $75 instead of $100. The devaluation affects only cash-back redemptions; other redemption options, such as travel bookings through Citi Travel or gift cards, remain unaffected. The email announcing the change was sent to a select group of cardholders, raising questions about the targeted nature of this devaluation. While cardholders can transfer points to other Citi cards like Custom Cash or Double Cash to maintain the 1 cpp value, this requires additional steps. The author highlights that transferring points to travel partners typically offers a higher value (well over 1cpp), mitigating the impact of the devaluation for savvy users. However, the loss of the base 1 cpp cash-back value is still considered disappointing. The unexpected nature of this targeted devaluation and the availability of alternative redemption methods create a complex situation for affected cardholders. The situation underscores the importance of understanding rewards program terms and conditions and exploring various redemption options to maximize the value of rewards points.
