SBFC Finance in Focus: Tata Life Insurance Buys Stake via Block Deal
SBFC Finance Ltd, a small-cap NBFC providing secured MSME and gold loans, recently entered focus due to a significant block deal. The transaction saw the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) completely divesting its stake, while prominent institutional investors like Tata AIA Life Insurance and Temasek-backed Aranda Investments acquired substantial shares, indicating a notable ownership reshuffling.
MIT's FDI arm fully exited, selling its 1.25% stake (1.36 crore shares) for approximately Rs 143.37 crore. Other overseas investors, including MIT Basic Retirement Plan Trust and 238 Plan Associates LLC, also reduced holdings. Conversely, Tata AIA Life Insurance purchased 0.75% (82.31 lakh shares) for about Rs 86.54 crore, and Aranda Investments secured 0.65% (71.33 lakh shares) for Rs 75 crore. These acquisitions by well-known institutions underscore sustained confidence in SBFC Finance's long-term prospects, despite earlier foreign investor exits.
Financially, SBFC Finance demonstrates robust growth. Its net interest income (NII) rose to Rs 375 crore in Q2 FY26, a 33.5% year-on-year increase, with Profit After Tax (PAT) growing 30% year-on-year to Rs 109 crore, reflecting improved profitability. The company empowers entrepreneurs and MSMEs across India with crucial credit, using a “phygital” strategy combining digital efficiency with personal relationships. Its extensive branch network reaches underserved Tier-2 and Tier-3 locations, and it also offers specialized loan management services to other institutional lenders.
While exhibiting strong performance and institutional backing, SBFC shares, with a Rs 11,462 crore market cap, trade at a PE ratio of 29.2, higher than the industry average of 21.8. Since its August 2023 listing, the stock has delivered a 19% return. The block deal, marked by selective foreign investor exits and robust institutional demand, highlights a dynamic market perception, balancing valuation metrics with confidence in the company's growth trajectory and strategic market position.
