Iberia Launches New Monterrey Route: Avios & Voucher Guide
Iberia is significantly expanding its Mexican route network with the introduction of new direct flights to Monterrey, located in the country's north. The inaugural service is scheduled for June 2, 2026, operating thrice weekly on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. The route will be served by an Airbus A330-200 aircraft, configured with 288 seats across Business and Economy cabins, notably lacking Premium Economy or First Class. Flight timings are designed to facilitate same-day connections from the UK, with IB305 departing Madrid at 12:55 and arriving in Monterrey at 5:25 pm, and IB306 leaving Monterrey at 6:50 pm to reach Madrid by 1:20 pm the following day. These services are confirmed to extend into the winter season.
A key benefit for frequent flyers is the ability to book these flights using Avios. One-way Avios costs vary by cabin and season: Economy ranges from 20,000 (off-peak) to 24,250 (peak), while Business costs 50,500 (off-peak) to 74,000 (peak). Passengers can also leverage a British Airways American Express 2-4-1 Companion Voucher when booking via ba.com, which can also provide a 50% Avios discount for solo travellers.
However, there are important considerations. The A330-200, while capable, isn't Iberia's most modern aircraft, contrary to some claims. A strategic tip involves Avios availability: seats appear on the Iberia website five days earlier (360 days out) than on ba.com (355 days). To access this earlier booking window and potentially better economy availability, travellers without a 2-4-1 voucher are advised to transfer their Avios to Iberia Plus and redeem directly, foregoing the BA voucher benefit. This distinction highlights a trade-off between maximizing Avios redemption opportunities and utilizing companion vouchers.
