JFK Terminal 6: A Museum of Art in an Airport
The new $4.2 billion Terminal 6 at JFK Airport is set to become a major cultural destination, boasting an extensive collection of art from renowned New York City institutions. This ambitious project, a collaboration between the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, JFK Millennium Partners, and four premier cultural institutions—the American Museum of Natural History, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Museum of Modern Art—will transform the passenger experience. The permanent art showcase will feature diverse works, ranging from large-scale installations to immersive visual art. Lincoln Center's contribution includes a 140-foot mural depicting the vibrant energy of the performing arts. MoMA is collaborating with Yoko Ono on a special installation inspired by her PEACE is POWER project. The American Museum of Natural History will display iconic specimens and images from its collections, while the Metropolitan Museum of Art will showcase highlights from its vast holdings. The overall art program, led by architect Stanis Smith and curated by Public Art Fund and the Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning, will also include 19 major site-specific installations and rotating local artworks. This initiative aligns with the Port Authority's broader vision of creating a world-class passenger experience at JFK, complementing upgrades at LaGuardia and Newark Liberty airports. Terminal 6, opening in phases starting in 2026, will also feature state-of-the-art facilities, including an automated baggage system, modern customs and TSA screening, and numerous airline lounges. The terminal's design incorporates sustainable building materials and energy-efficient systems, aiming for LEED, Envision, and SITES certifications. Ultimately, Terminal 6's art program promises a unique and enriching experience for millions of travelers annually, further solidifying New York City's reputation as a global cultural hub.
