Waldorf Astoria NYC Reopens: A Grand Restoration
The iconic Waldorf Astoria New York has reopened after a meticulous restoration, showcasing a blend of its original Art Deco architecture and contemporary design. The renovation, led by renowned architects Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), with interiors by Pierre-Yves Rochon and Jean-Louis Deniot, involved extensive archival research and collaboration with the Landmarks Preservation Commission. This ensured the preservation of the hotel's historical integrity while incorporating modern amenities and technology.
The transformation resulted in a reduction of rooms from 1,400 to 375 hotel guest rooms and 372 residences, but with significantly larger spaces. The majority of guest rooms now exceed 570 square feet, offering a residential feel with distinct zones for living, working, and sleeping. High-end finishes, custom furniture, and a bespoke bar in each room enhance the luxurious experience. Guests can choose from over 11 room categories, each designed as a private apartment.
Beyond the guest rooms, the reopening includes three distinct dining experiences: Lex Yard, Peacock Alley, and Yoshoku. The hotel's extensive meeting and event spaces, including the Grand Ballroom, also reopened on September 1st, along with the Guerlain Wellness Spa. Three entrances, including a unique Manhattan porte-cochère, provide convenient access. The restored “Spirit of Achievement” statue adorns the Park Avenue entrance, symbolizing the hotel's legacy and the successful completion of this extensive preservation project. Standard rooms are available for booking in early 2026.
