Aeroplan 2026: Big Changes to Rewards & Status

Air Canada's Aeroplan loyalty program undergoes significant changes starting January 1, 2026. The most notable shift is a transition from distance-based to spend-based point accumulation for Air Canada flights. Members will earn at least one Aeroplan point per dollar spent on eligible base fares and carrier surcharges (excluding taxes and fees). Elite status members will receive a multiplier, earning 2x to 6x points per dollar depending on their tier. This change incentivizes higher spending on flights to earn more points.

In addition, Aeroplan introduces Status Qualifying Credits (SQC) as the new metric for achieving and maintaining Elite status. SQC accumulation involves eligible flight purchases, Aeroplan credit card spending, and partner activities. Each dollar spent on eligible Air Canada fares can yield up to 4 SQC, with additional SQC obtainable through credit card spending (up to 25,000) and partner engagement (another 25,000). This system rewards members for diverse engagement with the Aeroplan ecosystem beyond just flight frequency.

Aeroplan Elite status benefits remain largely unchanged, encompassing perks like free checked baggage and priority airport services. However, a new “Milestone Benefits” program unlocks additional perks every 10,000 SQC earned. A 10% SQC bonus will be offered starting in 2027 for primary Aeroplan premium credit cardholders who achieve Elite status. While the changes aim to better reward loyal members, the impact on individual members will vary depending on their spending and engagement patterns. Current Elite status qualification remains unchanged for 2025, ensuring a smooth transition.
