BA Android App Fixes Login But New Version Delayed Until 2026
British Airways' Android app has long been plagued by severe performance issues, reflected in its abysmal 1.3 out of 5 rating on the Play Store from 53,000 reviews. These problems recently escalated when version 4.94 rendered the app completely unusable for much of the week, preventing users from logging in. Fortunately, British Airways released an updated version, 4.94.1, which has at least restored basic account access, addressing the immediate login crisis.
This incident highlights the ongoing struggles, especially as the much-anticipated new British Airways app, initially promised as part of a £7 billion transformation plan, has been significantly delayed. First announced in March 2024 with an expected launch in late 2024 or early 2025, the new app is now not expected until 2026. This substantial postponement, subtly revealed in a press release about Starlink Wi-Fi, means the app will be over a year late, potentially even longer given the vague “2026” timeframe.
The delay compounds user frustration, who continue to grapple with the existing app's deficiencies, such as the inability to download boarding passes (an issue experienced by the author's wife on the iPhone app) or persistent failures to store personal details on ba.com. Despite the extended development period, expectations for the new app's functionality remain low, with the author noting it's unlikely to rival industry leaders like United Airlines or SAS, often considered the “gold standard.”
Moreover, BA has informed investors that a key “benefit” of the new app will be “improved monetisation.” This implies the airline will gain the capability to charge for services, such as carry-on baggage, that its current IT systems do not facilitate. For users, this means the eventual arrival of the new app, whenever it materializes, could introduce new costs, potentially making the current login woes seem minor in comparison to future charges.
