JetBlue and United Airlines have announced a new partnership called “Blue Sky,” offering reciprocal benefits to their respective loyalty program members. This collaboration goes beyond a simple codeshare; it's an interline agreement allowing members to earn and redeem miles/points on either airline's flights. United MileagePlus members can earn and use miles on most JetBlue flights, particularly those connecting the Northeast to the Caribbean. Conversely, JetBlue TrueBlue members gain access to United's extensive domestic and international network. Booking flights will be simplified through both airlines' websites and apps. The partnership also extends to reciprocal benefits like priority boarding, preferred seating, free checked bags, and same-day flight changes, regardless of which airline's flight is being taken. A significant aspect of the deal involves JetBlue granting United access to seven daily round-trip flight slots at JFK's Terminal 6 starting in 2027, in exchange for eight flight timings at Newark. Further, United will utilize JetBlue's Paisly platform for its hotel, rental car, cruise, and travel insurance bookings. The partnership avoids the pitfalls of JetBlue's previous attempts at alliances, notably its failed attempt to acquire Spirit Airlines and its defunct partnership with American Airlines. This new arrangement offers customers a wider array of flight options and loyalty program benefits, integrating the strengths of both airlines' networks and loyalty programs. The full rollout of reciprocal benefits is expected later this year. This partnership is notable for its potential to reshape air travel in the Northeast, with implications for both consumers and the competitive landscape.
