PayPal+ Launches: Stack Rewards & Earn 1% Cashback in the UK
PayPal has introduced its first loyalty program, PayPal+, designed to reward UK customers for using its digital wallet for online purchases. Members earn 1 PayPal+ point for every £10 spent via PayPal checkout, or when sending money internationally. These points can be stacked with existing credit card rewards; for instance, a £1,000 Virgin Atlantic flight paid via PayPal with a linked British Airways Amex card would yield 100 PayPal+ points alongside 1,000 Avios. However, a key risk is the loss of Section 75 consumer protection when paying through PayPal, although PayPal offers its own dispute resolution.
The program also features a new UK debit card, offering a generous 10 points per £10 spent (equivalent to 1% cashback), guaranteed until at least the end of 2026. This card requires users to add funds to their PayPal wallet and doesn't link directly to external bank accounts. Certain transactions, like gambling or dating services, are excluded from earning points, but there's no limit to the total points earned, making the 1% return highly attractive for qualifying spend.
PayPal+ has three tiers: Blue, Gold, and Black, with progression based on points earned annually. While Blue tier members redeem 1,000 points for £10, Gold members receive £12, and Black members £13. Gold and Black tiers also benefit from a 50% boost on grocery, dining, and food redemptions, making 1,000 points worth £15. Higher tiers unlock significant additional benefits, such as Gold members potentially earning up to £150 annually from subscription cashback and £120 from monthly bonus points. Black tier members can receive up to £200 in subscription cashback and £240 from monthly bonuses.
Overall, PayPal+ offers a compelling opportunity to maximise rewards from online and in-store spending, acting as an extra layer of cashback on top of existing credit card benefits. Membership is free, easily activated via the PayPal app, and the debit card provides a strong 1% return, making it worthwhile for frequent PayPal users.
