The Rise and Fall of BA1: London City’s All-Business Flight
British Airways' BA1, known as the ‘baby bus', was a unique all-business class flight from London City Airport (LCY) to New York JFK, operating with a single Airbus A318. Launched in 2009, it offered ‘Club World London City', featuring 32 all-forward-facing seats. The flight provided several benefits, including a crucial pre-clearance stop in Shannon, Ireland, allowing passengers to clear US customs and immigration and arrive in JFK as domestic passengers, saving significant time. Initially, it boasted superior catering and higher Executive Club tier points, alongside a ‘mini lounge' at the LCY gate and an arrivals service at a nearby hotel.
However, BA1 faced inherent limitations and ultimately succumbed to various factors. London City Airport's short runway meant the A318 couldn't take off with a full fuel tank, necessitating the outbound Shannon stop. Over time, its unique selling propositions eroded; Heathrow services caught up in catering quality, and the rollout of Global Entry in the US reduced the advantage of Shannon pre-clearance. The flight's seats became dated, and ‘gate catering' was replaced by vouchers, then removed, while the arrivals lounge closed. In 2016, the second daily flight was scrapped, and the remaining service was discontinued in 2020 due to the pandemic, sealing its fate. The opening of the Elizabeth Line, offering fast connections to Heathrow, further diminished LCY's appeal for transatlantic routes.
Despite its scrapping, the article suggests a potential future for all-business class flights from LCY. Newer aircraft like the A220, certified for LCY, have already performed test flights to New York without a refueling stop. The A321LR and XLR also present opportunities for single-aisle transatlantic services, as demonstrated by JetBlue and Aer Lingus, hinting that a similar premium service from London or regional UK airports could re-emerge.
