SAS Reintroduces European Short-Haul Business Class
Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) has successfully reintroduced a dedicated short-haul business class across its European network after a 12-year hiatus, replacing the less understood ‘SAS Plus' product. This reintroduction aims to provide a full European business class experience, addressing previous confusion and offering enhanced passenger comfort and services.
Key benefits include a 2-2 seating configuration with a blocked middle seat for extra space, though the existing ‘surfboard' style seats remain largely unchanged. Passengers enjoy generous legroom, particularly in the front rows, and convenient amenities like USB-A chargers and free Wi-Fi for EuroBonus Diamond/Gold members. The ground experience is also elevated with fast-track security access and lounge access at 35 partner airports, exemplified by the Lufthansa lounge at London Heathrow Terminal 2.
Onboard service is a highlight, featuring a full bar with Charles Heidsieck Champagne, wines, spirits, and cashews. The airline now offers a three-course meal on flights under two hours, a significant upgrade. Specific examples include a traditional Danish lunch of beetroot tzatziki, Smorrebrod with grilled chicken, and mini waffles on the outbound flight to Copenhagen. The return dinner featured a cheese selection, Tandoori chicken with biryani, and chocolate shortbread, alongside bread rolls and ceramic cups for hot beverages.
While generally positive, areas for improvement exist. The cabin interiors are currently undifferentiated from economy, with hopes for future upgrades to seat upholstery. Meal choices are fixed unless special dietary requirements are pre-ordered, and some drink options, like mocktails, were unavailable. The Tandoori chicken, while flavorful, was noted as a “puzzling choice” for a Scandinavian airline. Despite these minor points, the reintroduction is deemed a success, delivering a comprehensive and improved short-haul premium offering.
