Wizz Air Trials ‘Wizz Class’: A Basic Business Class Experience
Wizz Air, typically an ultra low-cost carrier, is set to trial a new “Wizz Class” product in December, marking a significant departure from its basic fare model. This initiative, which is not an April Fools' joke, will introduce a basic business class offering on selected flights from London, Bucharest, Budapest, Rome, and Warsaw. The move follows requests from business travelers seeking more space while still benefiting from Wizz Air's competitive fares.
“Wizz Class” defines itself by offering a blocked middle seat exclusively in row 1, which already provides additional legroom as the bulkhead row. Beyond the extra personal space, customers will receive priority boarding, a dedicated carry-on bag allowance, and guaranteed overhead bin space, with further benefits to be announced. Crucially, this product will not include complimentary food, drinks, or lounge access, simplifying operations in line with Wizz Air's low-cost ethos. The trial is limited in scope, with only four “Wizz Class” seats available per flight, allowing the airline to test demand without significant cabin reconfigurations.
The introduction of such a product presents clear benefits for Wizz Air, enabling it to generate additional revenue from comfort-seeking passengers without incurring extra Air Passenger Duty or airport charges associated with selling more standard seats. This strategy mirrors Lufthansa's subsidiary, Eurowings, which has offered a similar “BIZclass” with blocked middle seats since 2017. However, potential risks include the opportunity cost of two fewer passengers per flight who might otherwise purchase ancillary services, a key revenue driver for low-cost carriers. The article also notes the simultaneous launch of “Wizz Play,” a basic in-flight Wi-Fi service offering WhatsApp messaging and in-seat ordering, which further diversifies the airline's offerings. This experimental approach aligns with Wizz Air's recent history of innovations, including long-haul flights to Saudi Arabia and its “All You Can Fly” membership program.
