BA’s Revamped First Wing at T5 Heathrow Unveiled
The British Airways First Wing at London Heathrow Terminal 5 has completed its renovation and is now fully open, offering an enhanced experience for premium passengers. This dedicated facility, accessible to First Class ticket holders, British Airways Club Gold/Premier members, and oneworld Emerald members, streamlines the journey from check-in to lounge access. The updated aesthetic features dark wood, burgundy wall coverings, and red signage, surprisingly reminiscent of Qatar Airways' design, though the intent behind this similarity is unclear.
Functionally, the core services remain consistent, providing numerous dedicated check-in desks and two private security scanners. A notable new amenity is a small non-alcoholic bar within the check-in area, replacing a previous informal drinks station, which aims to improve comfort for waiting passengers. A key benefit of the First Wing is its direct passage into the Galleries First lounge immediately after clearing security, significantly reducing transit time and enhancing the pre-flight experience. Its location at the southern end of Terminal 5 is particularly convenient for those arriving by taxi.
However, the First Wing's guest policy can be a source of confusion. While eligible members can bring multiple guests for check-in, access to the private security lane is strictly tied to lounge entry. This means Gold or oneworld Emerald cardholders, typically permitted only one guest in the lounge, face a limitation: if they have more than one guest, the additional companions, along with the primary cardholder, must then exit the First Wing and clear security via the main terminal. This divergence between check-in and security access can inconvenience larger groups or families, despite the overall goal of providing a seamless premium service.
