Mutual fund expense ratios are applied to cover the cost of managing the mutual funds your money is invested in. As is the case with maintenance fees, you can shop around to find a low expense ratio.
Mutual fund loads are fees charged to the account holder for the cost of buying or selling shares. These loads can eat into your returns, but there are a number of high-quality, no-load mutual funds that will allow you to avoid this cost.

Traditional brokerage firms generally are better for investors who are more hands-on, as they allow you to choose your investments.
